Small Town Churches

Visiting a small town today, driving around enjoying the ambience of small-town life.  We passed a nice building, "Ford Street United Methodist Church."  Up and down a few streets, admiring the architecture and so forth, presently passed a large, old stone building, a few blocks away from the aforementioned building.  This one, "Trinity United Methodist Church."

"Man," I said, "it looks like the Methodists own this town!"

"Probably there was a split over the color of the carpet," said Mrs. Warr.

Laughter from both occupants of the car.  But upon reflection, one has to conclude that that might not be funny.

Certainly not funny. Unfortunately, too often true.

Chuck, the fact that she made the comment is evidence that that has happened all too often in too many places. Not funny.

Following the merger of the Methodist and the Evangelical United Brethren denominations in 1968, many small towns in the midwest had two United Methodist churches. This happened in the Indiana town were Elvin pastored at that time.

Vee, just as there are two Wesleyan Churches in many towns due to a merger of two denominations.
