Jesus the Light of the World

The lesson is from The Gospel of John 8:1-12.

       Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.  --verse 12

Jesus is teaching on the Mount of Olives where a woman taken in adultery was brought to him by the religious leaders, brought to him for confirmation of the stoning judgment.  Jesus said, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone," bent and wrote with his finger on the earth.  We know not what he wrote, but when he looked up the woman's accusers were gone.

"Where are those who condemn you?" Jesus asked the woman.

"There are none." 

"Neither do I condemn you.  Go, and sin no more."

1. The law always reveals our guilt.

2.  Justice always demands an answer.

     Jesus answered with grace.  

Grace gives us the key to freedom.  Grace liberates us from punishment and from the inclination to sin.  It provides a provision for freedom from sin.

Where sin abounds, grace abounds much more

3.  Light gives us hope.
     The enemy wants us to remain in bondage.  To hide the sin is the relinquish hope.  To reject the Light is to reject the only One who can give us freedom. 

God's love gives grace.  The Light of the World offers hope.
