Just yesterday Grace at
Dragon's Alley and I were engaged in a conversation via blog comments about the careless manner in which newspapers seem to select their homophones these days. I commented that, while I was not ungrateful for a daily local paper, said paper was rife with examples of such bad selections.
Today came the paper and there was this one:
Seems, though, that AP gets the credit for this one, rather than the local editor.
Then this
which is not in the same category, but it does seem to be a selection of a word which is merely close to the one needed.
I have such fun with the newspaper these days!

It took me a few seconds to figure out edition should have been addition - I don't find these kinds of errors very often in the Washington Post but oh The Philadelphia Inquirer...it should be advertised as a humorous publication because it made me laugh every day....
Spell check doesn't catch those errors, sadly.
Grace, some of us do find our amusement in strange quarters.
Lin, nope. Spell check will always let a correctly spelled word pass, whether or not it is misused.
Think the eds need an editor!
Vee, they could perhaps use one more set of eyeballs.
